# Teamsters National Pipeline ### Posts #### 164-Year-Old Gas Pipe, Oldest in Chicago’s Heating System, Formally Retired Chicago — As part of the final stages of work to replace very old energy infrastructure in and around Chicago’s Loop, Peoples Gas formally retired a cast iron gas pipe that had been in service for 164 years. The pipe, a natural gas main, runs beneath Wabash Avenue and was in service since 1861. That’s the year Abraham Lincoln became president. Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger pledged on the trail to reduce Virginians’ electric bills and support local energy production. The energy mix should include offshore wind development, she said in campaign materials, as well as solar projects in “commonsense locations” like abandoned mines and former industrial sites. While the document didn’t mention natural gas, Spanberger in August said that the fuel is going to “be part of the energy mix into the future.” Read entire article HERE #### Gear Up: CDL & Load Securement Training This March Safety isn’t just a checklist; it’s the backbone of everything we do on the pipeline. Data centers — the digital backbone of AI, cloud computing, and our increasingly connected world — are rapidly multiplying. These facilities require enormous amounts of electricity 24/7, and that demand is only going to grow. While renewables play a vital role in our energy mix, natural gas remains critical to ensuring the kind of reliable, scalable power needed to support the AI-driven future. For Pennsylvania, the second-largest natural gas producer in the United States, this presents a massive opportunity–not just to fuel the future, but to lead it. AI models, cloud infrastructure, streaming services, and modern enterprise tools all rely on massive data centers — many of which consume as much power as small towns. Unlike intermittent power sources, natural gas provides the on-demand electricity these facilities require. Its flexibility allows it to ramp up when needed, balance the grid, and complement the growth of renewable energy sources. In many regions, new data center projects are paired with natural gas generation or are located near existing plants for precisely this reason: reliability and performance. With the resources we have underfoot, Pennsylvania stands out. Without stable power, AI can’t deliver on its promise. And without natural gas, we risk bottlenecks in digital innovation. Pennsylvania sits on top of the Marcellus Shale, one of the most prolific natural gas formations in the world. Every day, workers across the state safely extract affordable, clean-burning energy that powers homes, businesses, and, increasingly, the data centers of the future. As the second-largest natural gas-producing state in the United States, Pennsylvania is in a prime position to lead the way — not just in energy production, but in economic development. The buildout of infrastructure that supports gas delivery — pipelines, processing plants, and power generation facilities — means more jobs, stronger communities, and increased state revenue. Earlier this month, a powerful coalition of energy industry leaders, labor representatives, and policy influencers gathered in Delaware County to deliver a united and urgent message: Pennsylvania is at the forefront of America’s energy future — and homegrown, clean-burning natural gas is the engine driving it. With expanded infrastructure and facilities such as Energy Transfer’s Marcus Hook terminal, Delaware County is quickly becoming a strategic energy hub for the East Coast. The event underscored this critical intersection of energy, economic development, and innovation and technology. But we can’t take that leadership for granted. It’s not enough to have the gas in the ground — we need to be able to move it efficiently and safely to where it’s needed. That means investing in new pipeline infrastructure, expanding capacity on existing systems, and ensuring regulatory frameworks support timely and responsible development. Without the ability to transport gas to power plants, manufacturing hubs, and data centers, Pennsylvania risks losing its competitive edge. Bottlenecks can mean higher prices, missed opportunities, and the loss of high-tech development to other regions or even countries. Every mile of pipeline, every new compressor station or upgraded plant, represents good-paying jobs–many of them filled by skilled union labor. The infrastructure buildout isn’t just about energy; it’s about revitalizing communities, supporting working families, and keeping the next generation of Pennsylvania workers employed in meaningful, future-facing industries. Investments in energy infrastructure are investments in people. From pipefitters and electricians to truck drivers and equipment operators, the energy economy supports tens of thousands of jobs across the state. These are careers with dignity, training, and long-term stability–and borne of a culture of safety, responsibility, and professionalism. As AI reshapes every corner of the global economy, energy will be the invisible force driving that transformation. Pennsylvania has the resources, the workforce, and the technical know-how to be at the center of it all. But only if we keep building–responsibly, strategically, and boldly. That means: Supporting natural gas production with clear, consistent permitting policies. Investing in pipeline and power infrastructure to meet growing energy demands. Leveraging union labor to ensure quality, safety, and good wages. Partnering with technology companies looking for energy-secure regions to build in. Pennsylvania doesn’t have to just power the AI future–we can help define it and build it together. Kurt Knaus is director of the Pennsylvania Energy Infrastructure Alliance, a broad-based coalition of labor, agriculture, manufacturing and other business interests statewide that support private investment in pipeline and other energy infrastructure developments. He wrote this for DelawareValleyJournal.com. I’ve seen firsthand how essential reliable power is for our homes, businesses, and industries. For that reason, I strongly advocate for natural gas power generation in our state (Dockets: 6630-CE-316, 6630-CG-139, 6630-CG-140). I am committed to ensuring that Wisconsin’s energy transition is not just environmentally responsible, but also worker-focused. As we phase out coal, natural gas is a critical component of a strategy that honors the hardworking men and women who keep our energy systems running, ensuring that they are not left behind as we move toward a cleaner future. Natural gas is not a competitor but a partner to renewable energy. Its reliability supports the grid while we expand renewable capacity, ensuring a stable transition and keeping our energy affordable. Natural gas facilities also support thousands of family-sustaining union careers in construction, maintenance, and operations across Wisconsin. By working together, we can build a future where Wisconsin leads in both clean energy innovation and a strong workforce, ensuring that every worker shares in the benefits of our progress. By signing below, I give the Wisconsin Building Trades Council the authorization to forward this letter to relevant federal, state, and local officials in support of any natural gas energy infrastructure project in Wisconsin. Name First Last SignatureUnion and Local #Address Street Address City State / Province / Region ZIP / Postal Code CAPTCHA #### Equipment Types There are many types of equipment that can be used on a Pipeline construction job. It is important to know which types of equipment may be used, along with the details about each type of equipment. STRINGER TRUCK A Stringer Truck utilizes a typical tractor suitable for pulling heavy loads of pipe. The tractor pulls a specialized trailer constructed to pull long loads of pipe up to 80 feet long. The stringer trailer is steerable and uses a cable system built to rotate the rear axles of the trailer so that the trailer follows the tractor. This simple mechanism allows the long loads to track the tractor and enables the unit to make sharper turns on the highway without impeding traffic and on the construction right-away. Although the tractor operates as any commercial motor vehicle the driver needs to develop special skills in maneuvering the trailer. CREW BUS Since pipelines are built across all kinds of terrain workers cannot take their personal vehicles to the work site. The work crew will park at the pipe yard or other location and are shuttled to the work site on a bus. The Crew Bus acts not only as a means of transporting the crew but can also act as the break or lunch room where a work crew can get out of the weather or other elements. Crew bus drivers need a minimum of a Class “B” CDL with a passenger endorsement for a vehicle that can carry in excess of 16 passengers. The busses can vary in size depending on the crew and many contractors use old school busses configured for the job. FORK LIFT Forklifts are utilized in many situations during pipeline construction. Most commonly they are used in the supply functions lifting and transporting parts and in warehouse operations. Forklifts are also used to on the right-away and rough terrain to assist the crew in the construction process. Forklifts come in many sizes and Forklift operators are required under OSHA to receive training in accordance with the type of equipment they are operating. FUELER Equipment on a pipeline job must be refueled on a regular basis. You cannot take the equipment to the local gas station. You must bring the fuel to the equipment. Fuel trucks can vary in size and type but generally all have the same purpose. The Fueler transports fuel to the right-away or other work locations, and then fuels the equipment. The driver must have a Class “A” or Class “B” CDL, depending on the type of truck used. The driver also needs a HAZ-MAT endorsement on the CDL. A periodic HAZ-MAT training and refresher training is required. Additionally, the Fueler needs to have a full understanding of the types of fuels used in particular equipment. Putting the wrong fuel in a piece of equipment can cause serious damage to the equipment, which would likely result in the termination of the Fueler. MOROOKA A Morooka (tracked truck) is a rubber-tracked truck that comes in different sizes and are used in many different ways on the pipeline. It can carry heavy loads and transport men/women and materials into places where regular trucks can’t reach. FLOAT/FLATBED A Float/Flatbed is a combination vehicle. Its consists of a Tractor and 48’ or 53’ flatbed trailer or a step deck trailer. Float/Flatbed drivers haul a wide variety of material on the pipeline. Most Float/Flatbed drivers haul digging mats for the majority of the jobs. #### FAQ URL: https://www.teamsterspipeline.com/general-information/faq/ #### Find Work URL: https://www.teamsterspipeline.com/find-work/ #### General Contractor Info URL: https://www.teamsterspipeline.com/general-information/general-contractor-info/ #### General Information This area is divided into 3 sections for Members (or Drivers), Stewards and Contractors.
